Choosing Life
READING
: Deuteronomy 30 : 15, 19 -20
Moses said to the people,
“See today I set before you life and prosperity,
death and disaster…… I set before you life or
death, blessing or curse. Choose life, then, so that you
and your descendants may live, in the love of Yahweh your
God, obeying his voice, clinging to him ; for in this
your life consists, and on this depends your long stay in
the land which Yahweh swore to your ancestors Abraham,
Sarah, Isaac and Jacob he would give
them.”
REFLECTION
The
Israelites received this message from Moses whilst they
were on a journey. Lent is a journey for us Christians and
we too are being urged to choose life. Urging us to choose
life seems a bit unnecessary. Who in their right mind would
want to choose death ? However, if we pause to
reflect on the choices we make in our daily lives we might
see that many of them are not life-giving at all, either to
ourselves or to others.
-
How do I bring life to others in my community, in my place of ministry ?
-
Do I bring Good news to other people’s lives ?
-
What gives me life ?
-
Am I in any way spoiling life in my community or in my place of ministry ?
-
Do I make any choices which deaden myself or others ?

PRAYER
God, source
of all life, your son Jesus came amongst us that we might
have life and have it to the full. Release us from our
imprisoning fears and from every form of self-preoccupation
which robs us of the gift of wonder at the miracles of your
creation and blinds us to you present in all things and in
all people. Through our fidelity to this Lenten journey may
we be bearers of your light and life to all whose lives we
touch. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
